How to guide on Minecarts in Minecraft
Minecarts are used in Minecraft to move players or things across long distances. It can be extremely useful when you are building a structure in a biome that doesn’t have the items you need to craft. If you setup a mine rail in a biome where you are mining materials you can equip a minecart and send it to the biome that you are building in – allowing you to transport more materials faster than walking the distance.
Minecarts are fairly simple to build, and can be operated manually or automatically by powering the rails. A power rail can be activated by a redstone torch or a detector rail. Getting a minecart started is fairly simple- you only need a minecart, rails, powered rails, blocks and a button.
First you need rails. You can use these for the length of your track, but you will should place a powered rail every 34 blocks if you want to keep a consistent speed. If you don’t mind slowing down a bit in between power boosts you can place them every 38 blocks. To build a rail you need 6 iron ingots and 1 stick. This will result in 16 plain rails.
To create a powered rail you will need 6 gold ingots, 1 stick, and 1 redstone. This will result in six powered rails. Remember that you wont need as many powered rails as you would normal rails – a 1 to 34 ratio. This doesn’t include how many powered rails you would need to move carts up an incline though, so plan on using a few more than the 1 to 34 ratio.
To start the rail, place a power rail up against a block that will be your starting point, and put a button on the block above it. set the rails going out into the direction you want the system to go. Place the minecart on the track on top of the powered rail and press the button. Your minecart will start moving.
Keep the minecart moving by placing a powered rail every 34 blocks. You will need to power the rail with redstone. You can do that with a redstone torch or a detector rail. Detector rails are useful for powering on the rail only in certain instances (one way tracks) or if your rails were going through a narrow tunnel. Torches are useful because not only do they provide light – they keep the rail constantly powered which facilitates two way tracks.
After you have a rail system you can upgrade your minecarts and use them for special purposes. Minecarts with a standard chest will transport your materials from one place to another. Minecarts with hoppers will collect items from along the track or chests placed above the track, and minecarts with TNT will explode if they end on an activator rail.
All in all minecarts can be very useful tools in minecraft. You can see how minecarts and their rail systems are built in the video I made that shows all that I just wrote about. Please like or comment on the video to let me know what you think!
